My inconsistent but often firmly held opinions, not those of my employer.

Human pelt (by StiltbeastStudios)

This is creepy and hilarious - man makes a skinned human lookalike by taking a heat gun to some black bin bags and then painting the resulting mess.

The best bit is when his wife shows up as he is adding the hair to his human pelt. Imagine being married to this dude!

But what work would they do?

Colonizing Space - ’70s Style! (by SpaceRip)

Worth it for the 70s synth theme tune alone.

In the future that was meant to be, we were all going to be living AND WORKING in space colonies.

But what were we supposed to be working AT? Was the idea the ultimate in off-shoring? Just doing the same jobs as now but in space where it was cheaper? (Although it’s hard to see how putting people into space to work would be anything other than incredibly expensive).

Why not just say we’d be living in space? Surely if we got to the stage where we could all leave earth permanently, we might be able to give up work too and spend all our time having fun or getting drunk.

The Hectic Schedule of a Social Media Manager
Via Socialcast, a social media manager’s day starts at 5:30 and goes until you finally need some sleep. In the meantime, you’re writing, reading, recording, tweeting, pushing, pulling and otherwise evangelizing for your organization.
Clicking through to the full graphic, you’ll see that that 62% of social media managers are female, most have 1-4 years of experience (it is a nascent industry position, after all) and salaries range from $34,432 to $56,571.
Many social media managers are here on the Tumblr. Does this sound about right?

Disneyland Progress 1955 - Part 1 (by mousefiles)

Fascinating piece of archive video about the creation of Disneyland.

The best bit is the amount of time given up to road porn.

@Percolate is a fun new RSS reader that bubbles up content from my google reader in a concise and timely manner. Every afternoon at 4pm I expect my little brew. The metaphor really works here – I love it! This morning I was pleasantly surprised by a Percolate email reporting someone was “following” me. I logged in to check out these newly implemented features but found myself taken aback by the typography. Beautiful typography is not legible typography. This is a reader, you guys. Take it easy. Combining multiple @font-faces renders your product illegible. It’s disorienting to have a slab serif with a condensed sans-serif and a serif all in one segment of the feed. There’s also a whole set of light and bold weights and obnoxious kerning! How am I supposed to read ANYTHING? It may look beautiful but the design needs to be tempered with the user in mind.
As designers, we need to be tuned in to the user and their needs. How do they interact with the product or space? What do they take away? There are numerous ongoing studies on how people consume text and products being developed in light of those results. Readability is a bookmarklet dedicated to helping people read lengthy articles on the web. OmmWriter is software that allows you to concentrate on writing by blocking extraneous windows from your screen. These products are telling – users need clarity, information in digestible bits (moderation), and focus.
